The water requirements of high density coffee; 1: Responses to irrigation and plant water stress measurements

The results of an irrigation experiment with high density coffee suggest that periods of soil water deficit are necessary at high densities for the highest yields of cherry, even though plant moisture stress was increased and vegetative growth reduced. No evidence was found that water stress was increased at higher densities until much higher densities than are commercially feasible. It is considered probable that crop water use per unit land area does not greatly increase with increasing tree density and the better mutual shelter at high density might therefore be of benefit to the water status of the tree. Water is no more of a constraint to the planting of high density coffee than it is to conventionally spaced coffee and the yield advantages of high densities might be greatest in the hot dry coffee areas
