Phytopathological aspects of disease resistance and resistance breeding in cocoa: an external review

The external review of cocoa resistance breeding and resistance testing programmes showed a large amount of data untapped, a wealth of testing methods with a lack of uniformity, and much knowledge but failing continuity. Partial resistance of cocoa against various diseases is available and can be used in resistance breeding. Resistance breeding programmes should not stand apart but should be fully integrated in the general breeding programme. Sponsor money will be more easily obtained if international consensus on test protocols and on prebreeding is reached. INGENIC and associated bodies could stimulate the necessary international negociations
