Technical advances in vegetative propagation of cocoa

The use of clonal propagation in cocoa plant is still rare. There are several reasons for this, some of which are technical problems and lack of superior clones for hybrid seedling. Nowadays, however, superior clones are available and they turn out to be more economical. Applicable budding techniques in polybag nursery have been introduced. Mature budding technique using superior clones can improve yield of unproductive trees. Side-cleft grafting technique for mature tree has been found, and it proves to be more successful and more applicable than mature budding. This technique is important in the rehabilitation of unproductive trees in the existing area to improve the yield and quality of cocoa bean.
