Scolytidae and Platypodidae associated with Ceratocystis wilt of Thebroma cacao L. in Costa Rica

Thirty-seven apparent species of Scolytidae and Platypodidae were collected, and 21 identified, from Theobroma cacao L. in Costa Rica, Biologies of the following species were discusses: Xyleborus ferrugineus (Frabricius), X. posticus (Eichhoff), X. affinis Eichhoff, X. godmani Blandford, X. perebeae (Ferrari), X. theobromae Hopkins, X. corniculatus Schedl, X. spinosulus Schedl, Corthylus compressicornis Blandford, Hipothenemus eruditus Westwood, H. georgiae (Hopkins), H. hampei (Ferrari), and H. setosus (Eichhoff). Xyleborus ferrugineus attacked apparently halthy cacao and was suspected of transmitting Ceratocystis fimbriata Ellis & Halsted, a vascular fungal parasite. A detailed description of the biology and life-history of X. ferrugineus was presented. The sequence of ambrosia and twig beetle attacks as related to disease development was presented. Selected cacao varieties with Criollo parentage were notably more susceptible than seedlings; but, once infected, disease development was more rapid in the high-branchig seedlings. Control investigations were non-conclusive, but encouraging results were obtained with 1 percent Thiodan applied to the basal 2 to 3 feet of tree trunks. This treatment was applied to control X. ferrugineus attacking tree based and would be economically feasable if an effective adhesive could be perfected.
