The use of shade for cacao

The significance of the use of shade for cacao is discussed in the light of experimental work. It is shown that a significant interaction exists between the mineral nutrition of the tree and degree of shade under which it is growing. The practical implication is that on rather poor soils shade is necessary to maintain the tree in a healthy condition but yields are low. On fertile soils the highest yields will be secured with little or no shade.
