Análise da parcela no mercado internacional do cacau

Presently, the main poles of cocoa production are the Ivory Coast (29.3 percent), Brazil (15.3 percent) and Malaysia (10.5 percent). The high degree of price instability along the years, shown by this market, with serious implications over productive and consuming sectors, has led to a search of international agreements with the objective of stabilizing world prices of the product. The objective of this study is to analyse Brazilian share in cocoa world market, evaluating the effects of the International Agreement on Brazilian exports. The method of marginal market share analysis was used, which measures total variation of imported quantities of Brazilian cocoa in three effects: market size, distribution and competition. It was also applied the traditional method of market share analysis comparing the subperiod of 1960-72 (whithout Agreement) with the subperiod of 1973-88 (with Agreement). Marginal market share analysis indicates great annual fluctuations in the effects, imputed to the own structure of cocoa world market, a permanent cultivation essentially affected by climatic conditions. It also contributes to these fluctuations the demand price-inelasticity of the product. Market size and competition effects between the two subperiods were positive, indicating that Brazil was able to take advantage on world imports growth. The negative distribution effect indicates loss of position in specific markets. With regard to world imports growth rate, there was none significant variation in the fore and post-Agreement periods. Nevertheless, Brazil seems to have been improved by the Agreement, as its exports average share passed from 9.1 percent to 11.8 percent. A more aggressive program of market conquest is suggested, translated in competition effect, which really could contribute in order to Brazil gaining more exchange value from cocoa exports.
