Eco-physiology of the cacao tree

This paper does not intend to be an exhaustive review of all the published material dealing with the physiology and ecology of the cacao tree. It has been written upon the request of the director of the Institut Francais du Café et du Cacao, M. René COSTE, and its main purpose is to summarize and appraise the present state of our knowledge on some basic physiological principles underlying the relationship between cacao yield and variation in environment and cultural practices. I will refer especially to studies on water relations, growth periodicity, flowering, fruiting, cherelle wilt and the shade problem. Because of my many years of association with the Inter-American Institute of Agricultural Sciences, at Turrialba, Costa Rica, and lately with the recently created Centro de Pesquisas do Cacau (Cocoa Research Center), at Itabuna, Bahia, Brazil, most examples will be drawn from the work at these two organizations.
