The pit method of rooting cacao

A pit three by five feet was made twenty inches deep as a propagating unit to take advantage of the fact that the ground serves as a good insulator. A jute cover was used, and sawdust as the rooting medium. Watering was done tree or four times daily to keep the cover constantly damp. The rootings was better in the pit-type propagator than in the conventional Trinidad unit. A larger pit twenty-two feet in diameter was built with a rotary lawn sprinkler mounted three feet above ground level. The sprinkler was operated three times daily for twenty to twenty-five minutes during dry periods and ten to fifteen minutes during wet periods. The sprinklers were also operated for brief periods during the day to keep the covers wet. No shade was used. Fifty-seven per cent rooting was obtained.
