The use of a plastic resin for transplanting cacao

The widespread use of vegetatively propagated clonal material is being handicapped by the very large transplanting losses incurred in spite of all precautions taken. In the transplanting of evergreens, losses appeared to be reduced by spraying the cut foliage with Goodrite VL-600, a venyl resin latex (diluted with 4 parts water and mixed with a wetting agent). An experiment in wich cacao seedlings were treated and transplanted showed that seedlings treated with Goodrite survived better than those untreated on transplanted enclose in Polyethylene plastic cloth bags, in both sunny and shady locations. Losses were so small in the shipment and transplanting of large lots of rooted cuttings that spraying with Goodrite is now standard practice at the Estación Experimental Tropical del Ecuador.
