Novas opcoes para controle das formigas cortadeiras, Acromyrmex subterraneus brunneus e Atta sexdens sexdens (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Attini), na regiao cacaueira da Bahia, Brasil
A range of pesticides, formulated as powders or granulated baits, was evaluated for the control of leaf-cutting ants Acromyrmex subterraneus brunneus and Atta sexdens sexdens, both of which are pests of crops in the cocoa producing region of Bahia. All tested products exhibited satisfactory control of A. subterraneus brunneus, although nests became inactive more rapidly with the application of powders than with the baits. Only baits produced satisfactory control of A. sexdens sexdens. Colonies which were treated with insecticidal powders, exhibited an initial decline in activity but later returned to normal activity. The consequencies of using the baits are discussed, with particular references to their advantages over the organochloride pesticides which are normally used to control leaf-cutting ants. The baits formulated with copper oxichloridae and diflubenzuron are recommended for the control of both genera, while insecticidal powders formulated with fenthion, deltamethrine and fenitrothion, should be used for the control of Acromyrmex only. The dose of the baits and powders is 10 g of commercial formulation per square meter of nest area.
