Relacoes entre a floracao e a frutificacao do cacaueiro

To determine the yield potential of cacao (Theobroma cacao L.), 20 adult plants were continuously pollinated, 20 were pollinated naturally and in 20 all the fruits were systematically removed. The experiment began September 1982 and ended December 1986. However, only data collected in the agricultural years (April to March) of 1983, 1984 and 1985 were analized. At each two weeks wilted and non-wilted cherelles were counted. The wilted cherelles were harvested and dried in aventilated oven until constant weight. Mature fruits were collected monthly, separated into shells and seeds, dried and weighted. Flowering data were obtained weekly by counting flowers collected in a 0.5 m radius nylon nets placed around the cacao tree trunks. The results show that the systematic remotion of fruit caused a constant emission of flower and a significant increase in flowering intensity when compared to the other treatments. Quantity of cherelles in plants continuously pollinated was significantly greater than in cacao trees with natural pollination. However, the quantity of harvested mature fruits was not statistically different in these treatments due to the significant increase in wilted cherelles. The results suggested that the cacao behavior is similar to other crop species which set the fruit load depending upon their assimilate production.
