Varietal resistance of young clones and seedlings of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) to root infection by Phytophthora palmivora
The responses of a number of selections of the pathogen causing "black pod" disease have been investigated. In general, selections highly susceptible to "black pod" disease suffer a severe set-back, while selections resistant to the pod disease suffer relatively little and often appear to benefit. It appears that the mechanism conferring resistance is systemic within the whole plant, and is not restricted to the pod tissues alone. It is suggested that the root infection technique may be of practical value in developing varieties resistant to Phytophthora palmivora.
