Resultados preliminares sobre o establecimiento de um sistema de controle da vassoura de bruxa na Amazonia

The effectiveness of an annual phytosanitary prune in controlling witches' broom disease of cocoa (Crinipellis perniciosa) was evaluated in two heavily attacked farms situated in Pará and Rondonia in the Brazilian Amazon. In the latter area, other treatments to compare pruning frequency and fungicide application were included. Disease incidence was assessed by recording monthly pod losses and by visual estimates of vegetative infections. The initial results show that in all treatments the disease incidence was greatly reduced, although there were no significant differences between the three monthly and the annual prune. Application of Copper Sandoz during the first months of the rainy season increased production by 12 percent compared with the pruning only treatments but it is concluded that the fungicide application was of insufficient duration and should be continued until the end of the rainy season.
