Uso atual das terras da regiao cacaueira do estado da Bahia: folhas Itabuna, Una, Potiraguá, Mascote e Canavieiras

This paper attempts a preliminary demarcation and evaluation survey of the different types of land use in the Bahian Cacao Region. It was prepared by analysing aerial photographs (scale 1:25,000) using panchromatic film, taken in 1964 and 1968. Five vegetation maps are presented, scale 1:200,000, covering an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometers, showing the cultivated crop areas and natural vegetation. Agricultural crops in order of importance for the region are cacao (Theobroma cacao L.), rubber (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg.) and coconut palm (Cocos nucifera L.). It was estimated that in the areas under investigation, 202,400 ha were under cacao cultivation situated in 14 cacao countries. Eleven of them make up 51 percent of the Bahian cacao production with 190,932 ha of cacao. The survey also shows the areas occupied by grassland, subsistance crops, mangroves, swamps and plains. Mention should be made of the large primary forests existing in the region, estimated at 250,100 ha, within which are many species of commercial value.
