Perfil economico e social da producao de mel de cacau

This study presents economic and social aspects of the production of a cacao by-product the pulp juice, with emphasis on three aspects: the production and its costs, the industrialization and, finally, the acceptability of cacao farmers to engage themselves in the production of cacao juice for sale. The empirical data were obtained from a random sample stratified by the different levels of cacao production, totalling 150 farms from a census of 8,999 cacao farms in 1979 in the Homogeneous Micro-Region No 154 from the census diagnosis of industrial units of cacao juice situated in the region, and from the data which are collected periodically by the Division of Social Sciences and Statistics. It was observed that, although the economics of cacao juice is of little regional importance, there's a large potential to be explored, in the extraction as well as in the industrialization of this by-product. In the year 1978, only 0.4 percent of the potential production was extracted and industrialized. The extraction costs of the cacao juice vary among farmers. The industry has underutilized capacity. The industrialists see good prospects in this activity and the farmers show willingness to extract cacao juice for the market, if a series of obstacles are removed for both the groups.
