O mercado internacional de cacau em 1980 - uma comparacao de políticas alternativas

This study is concerned with predicting some aspects of the world cocoa economy in 1980. Cocoa is an important commodity for many less developed countries in terms of foreign exchange earnings, income, and employment. The first objective of the analysis is related to obtaining estimates of prices, production, exports, revenues and trade flows in the cocoa economy under the assumption of free-trade conditions prevailing in 1980; this assumption was relaxed in a second stage by introducing tariffs as well as the European Economic Community (EEC). The second objective is related to the formation of an international agrement among producers through estimation of possible revenue and welfare gains accruing to these countries. With the application of the reactive programming model to obtain the equilibrium solutions, it was found that the introduction of the EEC benefited those African countries associated with it. The expanded EEC however, would revert the pattern of trade to a situation quite similar to the free trade situation. In additon, the existence of tariffs would not much affect trade with the product. It was also found that considerable gains would result to producing countries from an international agreement resticting production and exports of cocoa.
