Investigations on a seedling die-back of Theobroma cacao L. in Nigeria, 2: Factors affecting the incidence of the disease and its control

A relationship is demonstrated between heavy shade and high relative humidity and the incidence of cacao seedling die-back disease caused by Phytophthora sp. This relationship appears to be similar to that already established between high rainfall and high relative humidity and the incidence of black pod disease. The incidence of die-back was greater in a heavy soil than in a sandy soil and this is presumed to be due to the waterlogging in the former under high rainfall. Such conditions might retard the growth rate of the seedling making it more susceptible to attack by the fungus. Soil sterilization and seed dressing had no effect on the subsequent incidence of die-back. Applications of 'Perenox' spray at 0.3 and 0.5 per cent at 3- or 6-day intervals from three weeks after sowing controlled the disease.
