The ant mosaic - tropical tree crops and the limiting of pests and diseases

Room (1972) has written "More successes than failures have been reported in the literature of attempts at manipulation of ants for pest control in tropical tree crops". It is the writer's belief that, in all problems involving pests and diseases of tropical tree crops, the following routine should be practiced. 1. The present, disease or disease vector should be mapped in several areas and distribution plotted in relation to the distribution of dominant ants. 2. The biological relationships suggested by the maps, both positive and negative, should be investigated so as to show whether they are causal or merely coincidental. 3. Any relationships uncovered which appear to show promise as control methods must be viewed in the light of the local mosaic so as to limit opportunities for the pest or disease-associated dominants.
