A inibicao gerada por Acanthosyris paulo-alvinii e por Combretum leprosum

This paper describes the inhibitory activity of the alcoholic extracts prepared with the kernel and leaves of the santalaceous Acanthosyris paulo-alvinii Barroso, and leaves of the combretaceous Combretum leprosum Mart. The tests were run with black bean seeds imbibed with the extracts properly diluted. A. paulo-alvinii is known to be harmful to the cocoa plant. As the extract of both kernel and leaves proved to be at length only moderately active, the harmfulness caused by it is better attributed to the root parasitism against Theobroma and other trees; this in fact has been found to occur. C. leprosum is said to keep other plants from growing under its plants. The leaf extracts assayed do have a materially evident inhibitory power on bean embryos. Its leaves are endowed with saponin, and, as this compound is known to be active as an inhibitor, the case may perhaps be comparable to that described for Encelia farinosa and Artemisia absinthium (Bonner, 1950; Funke, 1943); however, further research field and laboratory work is needed to throw light upon this matter.
