Smallholder cocoa and coffee dryer with solar heating and agricultural waste products as energy sources

To improve smallholder cocoa beans and coffee cherries drying method, a dryer with a capacity of 250 - 300 kg wet beans was demonstrated. Using solar heating and agricultural waste products as energy sources solar heating was intensified by installing above the dryer a cap of polyethylene sheet of 0.3 mm thickness in an appropriate manner, in order to raise the drying temperature up to 65 grade centigrade. The duration of drying cocoa beans to obtain a moisture content of 7 percent was 48 hours and drying fresh coffee cherries until 13 percent moisture content required 86 hours.
