U.W.I.-INIAP. Ecuador Cooperative Programme
W. S. Chalmers visited Ecuador in connection with the cooperative cocoa programme from February 5th-March 14th. Since this programme started in 1967 forty-seven U.W.I. varieties have been included in six progeny trials at the Tropical Experiment Station, Pichilingue. In addition 14 of these selections were included in a large INIAP Regional Trial planted on a private estate (San Antonio) in 1968. The material includes Scavina hybrids, IMC x IMC, PA x IMC, P x P crosses and a number of inbred ICS 6 x SCA12 F2 progenies selected for resistance to Witches' broom disease. The oldest of these trials, planted in 1968 is now bearing. The most important observations are (i) that the U.W.I. Scavina selections appear to have no resistance to the Ecuador strains of Marasmius perniciosus (ii) the markedly different habit of growth and reduced vigour of the IMC x IMC crosses which results in less infection with vegetative brooms and a much more manageable type of tree. In spite of the extremely vigorous growth of most of the hybrids at Pichilingue and in the San Antonio Regional Trial yields are disappointing and generally less than clones such as ICS 95, EET 62, 95, 96 and 103. A detailed report of this visit has been prepared.
