Peculiarity of a Nigerian isolate of the cocoa swollen shoot virus (CSSV)

Virulent and mild strains of the Nigerian Ilaro isolate of the cocoa swollen shoot virus (CSSV) were collected from farmers' plots at Ibese and Iweke in the Ilaro areas of mass infection. Their disease reactions and expressions on young "Amelonado" cacao seedlings were studied. A 9- to 24- month initial period of incubation in new plants graft-infected with virus inoculum from field-infected trees was noted; a subsequent short (3 to 5 months) incubation period was observed for symptom development, however, when these plants were back-tested to other new sets of plants. Increases in virulence of mild strains after subsequent transmission to healthy plants also were observed in this study. It was concluded that this CSSV isolate differs from other Nigerian isolates of the virus, studied previously, with respect to symptom type, virulence and period of latent infection
