Características da comercializacao de cacau na Bahía

The general objective of this study is to analyse the system of the commercialization of cocoa in the municipio of Ilhéus, Bahia. Specifically, it aims to identify the various channels of cocoa commercialization and to quantify the amount of the respective contributions by the participants in the market. The data were obtained by interviewing cocoa producers who were stratified in the sample according to the volume of their production and the exporters of cacao. The analysis uses the funtional and institutional market methods as a theoretical base. The principal results and conclusions show that the wholesale exporters are principally responsible for the commercialization of cocoa in the municipio of Ilhéus. Selling cocoa before the harvest through the futures market acts as a source of resources to cover expenses of production and commercialization: an activity which includes 24 per cent of the cocoa producers. This is in contrast to the 3 per cent of the cocoa producers who utilize institutional banking credit. This parcially explains the high frequency of debts, privately or institucionally renewed annually among the producers, when the advance obtained exceeds expected or actual receips obtained from future sales. The average length of storage of cocoa was found to be a relatively short period, 23 days, considering the nature of the product. About 17 per cent of the cocoa producers said that part of their production was sold as a non-superior type, subject to the bonuses and discounts for quality which are arbitrarily established by the buyers. In general, there seems to be a direct correlation between the size of interprise and the level of technology in the method of transportation utilized. This is explained, in part, by the phenomenon of the indivisability of the factors used in this transport and by the differences in the quality of roads
