Liberacao e fixacao de potássio em alguns solos da regiao cacaueira da Bahía

The fixation and release of potassium in seven soils of southern Bahia, Brazil were measured. The samples were extracted successively eight times with boring 1N HNO3 and then incubated for 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 months. Following incubation, one extraction was made with the same acid solution and in the same ratio of soil:solution. Potassium fixation was evaluated in moist samples (minor field capacity) and also in samples submitted to alternate moist and dry conditions. The Alfisol (Cepec) released higher amounts of potassium in all extractions. In the Oxisols (Colonia, Una and Valenca) the potassium was almost completely removed in the first extraction. Both the Ultisols (Vargito Eutrofico) and the Inceptisol (Rio Branco showed higher releasing capacity than the Oxisols. Extractions after the different incubation periods showed the same order of potassium release as that in the eight initial extractions. Potassium fixation increased not only with the level of potassium added but also with the incubation time. There was neither a clear distinction between Oxisols and less developed soils nor among incubation treatments. Other soil properties are described and the potassium fixation in Oxisols is discussed
