Intercultivo de pupunheira com cacaueiro na Amazonia brasileira, resultados parciais
Due to the fact that the peach palm (Bactris gasipaes) is valuable on account of its main products (fruits and palmetto), possesses precocity in development and has a good vegetative conformation, research in being carried out in the State of Amazonas, Brazil, in order to evaluate its feasibility for use in intercropping with cacao (Theobroma cacao). A 4 x 4 Latin Square design was used in which the treatments were spacings of peach palm of 6 x 6 m, 8 x 8 m, 6 x 12 m and 12 x 12 m. The cacao was planted at a spacing of 2 x 2 m. The production of bunch and fruits of peach palm and dry weight of cacao beans is being evaluated. Other parameters being studied are rhizography of the ecosystem and soil moisture content in different soil depths and during the dry periods of the year. The results from two years (1985 and 1986) of observations show that there is no evidence of adverse competition between the two species and that the peach palm is a promissing plant for intercropping with cacao. Nevertheless more data needs to be obtained to confirm whether the peach palm is suitable as a component of the agrosystems with cacao at the farmer level
