Estudos sobre a participacao da formiga cacarema (Azteca chartifex spiriti Forel) na polinizacao do cacaueiro na Bahia

Various field experiments were conducted to evaluate the contibution to cacao pollination by the "cacarema" and (Azteca chartifex spiriti Forel) and its associated insects. It was found that in the absence of insects there was no pollination and, that the "cacarema" did not itself pollinate the cacao flowers, yet the number of pollinations was greater on the trees where the ant had its nest. When cacao trees were sprayed with a suspension of "ground up cacarema", there was an increase in the number of fertilized flowers, suggesting that the ant has some substance which attracts pollinating insects. It was also observed that the "cacarema" seems to produce a greater quantity of this substance when in a state of excitation, caused by any external interference with its nest
