Biodinâmica de solo cultivado com cacaueiros sombreados e ao sol

This study was conducted at the Cacao Research Center at CEPLAC, Ilhéus, Bahia, from August 1974 to February 1975. It reports on a comparative study of cacao plantations under shade and no shade in relation to soil respiration and the activities of soils microorganisms. Soil respiration was determined by the inverted box method, while the cellulose decomposition rate of the soils in both areas was determined at soil depths of 2.5 cm, 10 cm and 20 cm by the buried cotton method. The results obtained showed that the CO2 evolution from the soil, total and from the microorganism separately, was higher under shade than under no shade. In the shaded area the daytime CO2 evolution rate was higher than the nighttime rate and in the nonshaded area the inverse was observed. The cellulose decomposition rate was higher under shade than under no shade at the three soil depths investigated. Soil temperature and water content were shown to greatly influence the cellulose decomposition in the shaded area. This study showed that in soils cultivated with cacao under shade, the activities of the soil microorganisms were higher than in soils under cacao trees growing in full sunlight, and that recycling of organic matter was more efficient and faster in the shaded soils than in the fully exposed soils. The total soil respiration of both environmental areas was compared with the tropical rain forest, perenifolia sul-baiana. The area under shade was found to have values of soil respiration similar to that of the tropical rain forest. In November 1974, the respiration of the shaded soil was higher than that in the tropical rain forest but in February 1975, it was a little lower. Other methods of studying soil, microorganism activities are indicated and their application to cacao plantation conditions are suggested
