Classificacao dos principais solos de cacau da Bahia, Brasil

This paper classifies the good soils for cacao growing in Bahia, Brazil by means of the modern soil classification known as the 7th approximation. Of the 10 orders within this classification system, nine were identified in the Bahian cacao region, but only two are important for cacao growing - Alfisols and Inceptisols. These soils are relatively young and are characterized by their high base saturation index (V = 100 S/T major 40 per cent); average to medium and high total cation exchange capacity (T major 16 mE/100 g of clay); moderately acid pH (5.5 - 6.5); good moisture retention capacity; medium depth (80-150 cm); loam to clay texture and richness in primary minerals. It is recommended that similar work should be carried out in the other cacao regions of the world so that classification studies in the future can be more standardized
