A proved case of heterosis in Theobroma cacao L.

Russell (1952) presented vegetative growth records of selfed progenies of CF176, CF62, CF59, N38 and their hybrids planted in 1942 in a 9 x 9 latin square arrangement; and showed that the hybrids outgrew the inbres significantly. This paper presents the pod production data of this trial up to the 26th year after planting. It is shown that the hybrids consistently out-yielded the inbred parent generations with a very marked effect up to 1965 and to a lesser extent in the three subsequent years. The selfed progenies of CD176 and CD207, themselves genotypes of an early selfed progeny of N38 differed significantly in yield implying that the N38 genotype segregates for yield factors. The analyses of variance showed 89.77 per cent of the total variance was due to crosses (heritability)
