First generation inbreds as parents in hybrids of Theobroma cacao L.

A trial of hybrids obtained by mating trees derived by selfing the cacao clones "ICS 1" and "ICS 45" for one generation is described. Although the trial was terminated prematurely some of the S1 x S1 crosses gave relatively higher yields than the So x So hybrid. The development of superior parents by inbreeding heterozygous individuals with promising characteristics is suggested. The paper describes a technique for obtaining improved single crosses by selection for yield components and other desirable characters in the early inbred generation combined with variety testing
