Intake and export of nutrients in cacao leaves

The intake and export of nutrients in cacao leaves was studied in a greenhouse experiment with Amelonado seedlings. During the first four weeks of the development of new leaves of the fourth flush, 39 percent of the phosphorus and 25 percent of the potassium content were exported from the leaves of the previous flush while the intake of nitrogen and magnesium by the older leaves was reduced by 22 and 50 percent respectively. Export of leaf potassium increased the intake of calcium by approximately 72 percent. Removal of all mature leaves at the time that new leaves started to develop greatly retarded the development of new leaves. Leaves of previous flushed contribute most to the development of new leaves and are the main reservoir of mobile leaf phosphorus and potassium
