Novo programa de renovacao de cacauais na Bahia

A new rehabilitation programme for the old cacao plantations in Bahia to be undertaken by CEPLAC (Plano de Recuperacao Economico-Rural da Lavoura Cacaueira) with effect from 1972 is presented in this paper. The programme introduces several modifications to the earlier work carried out during 1966/70, when two alternatives methods (clear-felling and renewal under existing cacao) will be used along with long term credit (8 years with four years of grace), with low interest rates (7 percent p.a.) and a 20 percent subsidy of the total investment. An area of 150.000 hectares of old cacao is expected to be rehabilitated through this programme with emphasis on small farmers and concentrated areas of production. Financial implications of this programme will be of the order of US 90 million spread over a period of thirteen years. Along with the expansion of new areas and the application of modern technology the programme is expected to increase cacao yield in the State of Bahia to an estimated volume of at least 320 thousand tons by 1989/90
