Vegetative propagation in Theobroma cacao L. seasonal influence on percentage bud take

Results of a budding experiment conducted at the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, Ibadan, for 48 months are reported. Time of budding had a highly significant (P menor 001) effect on final percentage budtake. The highest overall bud "take" was scored in October, while the lowest was in June closely followed by December. In general, buddings done between August and November scored over 60 percent success. As it takes an average of 20-30 days for budded scions to sprout, buddings done in October will produce 7 months old budlings at the time of transplanting into the field the following June when rain is steady. It is suggested that budding should replace the use of vegetative cacao stem cuttings since it given higher percentage success and is cheaper and easier to do
