Cocoa in Grenada

General aspects are described of the cocoa industry of Grenada, including: historical development; climate and soils; organization and significance, cultivation, processing and marketing; pests and diseases; research and the prospects of the industry. The crop is mainly grown by small holders in protected valleys and slopes in different parts of this island between 150 and 300 m altitude, where average annual rainfall is approx. 2,000 mm with dry months. Production in 1970 was estimated at 3,000 tons. The main pests are cacao beetle (Steirastoma breve) and the thrips (Selenotrips rubrocinctus), the major diseases are witches' broom (Marasmius perniciosus) and pod rot (Phytophthora palmivora).
