Bambu (Bambusa vulgaris Schard.) como protecao lateral de cacaueiros (Theobroma cacao L.) jovens sombreados com bananeiras (Musa sapientum L.) no Reconcavo da Bahia, Brasil
The mechanical damage caused to young cacao plants due to high wind speed (3.8 m sec exponent-1) made farmers use windbreaks. For its rusticity, easy propagation and canopy structure the bamboo has been used for this purpose but has been causing the death of young cacao plants and affecting negatively banana tree growth which offers temporary shade. In an attempt to avoid these damages trenches of 20, 40 and 60 cm depth were set between the bamboo row and the cacao and banana tree area. The trenches had a positive effect in limiting the bamboo roots coming into the cacao and banana tree area. This effect was greater the deeper the trench was and influenced on the cacao and banana growth and soil moisture content. The results indicate that bamboo could be a suitable plant as cacao windbreak since the negative effect caused by its roots can be avoided, with trenches 60 cm deep
