Sistema radical de la caña de azúcar 'V58-4' a los seis y doce meses de edad en un suelo del orden Mollisol del Estado Portuguesa [Venezuela, Saccharum officinarum, raíces].

The root system was studied in a sugar cane field, variety V 58-4, twelve and six months after germination. The soil is of the order Mollisol (Aquic Haplustoll) which is representative of the 26 per cent of the flat land of Portuguesa State. Roots were studied according to the monolite method. Samples were taken at two distances af the sides from the center of the row. Maximum penetration was observed between 30 and 50 cm depth. Maximun concentration at the sides was localized between 0 aud 35 cm from the center of the row. If was determined that 87 and 85 per cent of root weight was in the first 30 cm of the soil profile. Sugar cane was planted at the bottom of the furrou, a system which increases me trend to the fall down of the plant which in turn stimulates new groth. The above condition affects the yield of cane, and decreases the yield of sugar.
