USSR nature reserves their role in environmental education

Environmental education based in nature reserves is an important part of the nature conservation campaign launched in the USSR. In this paper the various aspects of environmental education activities in nature reserves are discussed: public lectures and museum displays within reserves, the design of study excursion paths and routes within a protected zone or along the boundaries of reserves, and lectures and exhibitions established outside reserves for the inhabitants of nearby large human settlements. The needs of society in the area of ecological education are broad. Nature reserves can only provide a small portion of necessary ecological training lest it affect their main scientific and nature conservation activities. The main examples of the scientific and educational work carried out in nature reseves are outlined including the important exchanging of experience and publishing of popular scientific literature. The necessity to develop specific programmes for environmental education within reserves in different geographic zones is also examined.
