Ecological and socio-economic research in the Mapimi Biosphere Reserve

This paper stresses the need in Mexico to link ecological and socio-economic studies in biosphere reserve research programmes if natural resource conservation objectives are to be attained. Conservation problems in developing countries are first considered, followed by a description of the concepts underlying the establishment of biosphere reserves in Mexico. The Mapimi Reserve is cited as an example. It is situates in the North Mexican semi-arid zone where the major economic activity in the buffer zone is extensive rearing of livestock, a description is provided of the main natural characteristics of the region along with information about units of production. This is followed by a review of research findings resulting from concerted action with local stockraisers.
