Similar biosphere reserves and principles for their selection

The global system of biosphere reserves established under MAB 8 provides a unique opportunity to determine changes in the biosphere through comprehensive monitoring under similar climate conditions on different continents. Companion studies of physical and geographic conditions create a basis for developing similar strategies for utilizing natural resources, protecting the gene pool, exchanging experiences, and testing comparable monitoring methods. The selection of similar biosphere reserves, however, is no simple task. The discussion of sister reserves is limited by the level of shared biosphere characteristic. It is proposed that selection of corresponding reserves be carried out primarily on the basis of comparable environmental parameters of ecosystems and the similarity of their reactions to global changes in the environment. The procedure for selecting sufficiently similar biosphere reserves is carried out in several steps, drawing upon published sources that reflect the conditions of the environment, the peculiarities of the ecosystems themselves, and validating field research. Paired activities in the International Network of Biosphere Reserves focus attention on joint research and on continental differences in the most representative biosphere conditions. Thus, they can substantially assist in the attainment of the goals of the MAB 8 programme.
