An international data bank of biosphere reserves and the need for standardization

This paper stresses the value of a standardized approach to research and monitoring activities in biosphere reserves, not only in the use of common data parameter, but also for the development of research and monitoring programmes. The need to maintain an international database on biosphere reserves is also highlighted, with the recommendation given for a database on research and monitoring activity recommneded for each site, as well as site descriptions and published information such as maps and management plans. The capabilities of the IUCN Protected Areas Data Unit (PADU) are described, and it is suggested that detailed information on biosphere reserves could be further integrated with the data maintained at PADU.
