Preservation of model ecosystems in reserves: Problems and their possible solutions
The preservation of model ecosystems is a major objective for nature reserves. This task has become more difficult with the transformation of natural complexes of reserves into isolated islands surrounded by vast developed areas. The main causes of disturbances to ecosystems preserved in reserves include: partial coverage of natural complexes precluding the regulation of run-off processes and adequate protection of animal populations whose habitats extend beyond the boundaries of the reserves, ecological isolation of a reserve from the surrounding areas resulting in disturbances of genetic processes in the population and exessive conservation of certain animal species which find no adequate habitats in outside developed areas, diffculties in conserving ecosystems at various stages of demutational successions, effects of human economic activities prior to the creation of a reserve, economic activities in surrounding areas, particularly progressive reclamation and regulation of the run-off of rivers running through a reserve. Suggestions are made for reducing outside effects on protected natural areas including the creation of buffer zones and the adoption of special conservation practices in areas adjacent to a reserve.
