Biosphere reserves for science and monitoring

MAB was created to promote international collaboration in science. The biosphere reserve programme has provided an ideal means to promote such collaboration, based on three basic concerns: conservation of biological diversity; establishment of biological baselines; and integration of human effects on biological systems. While research projects carried out under MAB have suffered from some shortcomings, a solid beginning has been made. Learning from past ex esperience, future research and monitoring efforts in biosphere reserves should be relevant to improving human, management of the biosphere, have a realistic chance of success; and lead to communication of results to differente relevant audiences.
