Interpretative plan Caroni Swamp National Park

Presently, Caroni Swamp has no adequate interpretive programme or facilities to assist visitors in understanding or developing an appreciation of this unique natural area. Past studies of visitors to the swamp have shown that the lack of information and educational services has been a principal cause of dissatisfaction. The objectives of the interpretive plan for the Caroni Swamp National Park are to help the visitor understand and enjoy the area shile at the same time make him aware of how to properly use and protect the resources. Principal interpretive themes are the mangrove ecosystem, the scarlet ibis, and the economic importance of the swamp. The plan calls for principal orientation and informational services to be provided at a visitor centre near the Park entrance which will include areas for arranging tours, audio visual programmes and indoor and outdoor exhibits. A nature trail through the reeds also originates from this development area. A second interpretive area is located at Medford Crossing and will provide an orientational exhibit and the starting point for the major mangrove ecosystem nature trail. This trail will give access to a viewing tower affording a panoramic view of the Park. Orientation and information will be available at Cacandee which is a secondary entrance to the Park. Interpretation of the scarlet ibis will be offered at a viewing platform provided to accommodate passengers from tour boats. A programme to train park guides will be initiated. Of specific importance for the guides is an understanding of the parks resources, park policies, rules and regulations, communication techniques and life saving/emergency skills. Publications, including a general park folder, a fishing guide and bird cheklist, trail guides and a booklet on the swamp will be prepared for distribution and/or sale. The Appendice to the plan provide details of the content of all exhibits and trails, as well as plans for their construction.
