An interpretative Master Plan for the National Recreation Area Ricardo Jiménez Oreamuno (Prusia) Cartago, Costa Rica. [Draft]
At this time the National Recreational Area "Prusia", located in the northeastern side of the Costa Rican Central Valley, has no adequate managemen plan nor an interpretative program or facilities to assist visitors in understanding and developing an appreciation of this unique natural area. During the course of this study I found that the lack of information about recreational and educational opportunities available on the area has been a major cause of dissatisfaction. The objectives of this study were to develop an interpretive plan testing the methodology outlined in 1974 by Spangle and Putney (49); providing general data and some general guidelines on resource management for this recreational area. The interpretive plan will help the recreational users to understand and enjoy the area, while making them aware of how to properly use the area and protect its resources. Principal interpretive themes are the Costa Rican highland forest vegetation; the Rio Reventado history and geology; the planted forest; and the contemporary human history and land use of the area and its surroundings. The plan calls for principal orientation and information services to be provided at an entrance station near the Park entry point; picnic and camping facilities at the place known as "The Arboretum", including two nature trails originating nearby this area. A second interpretive area is located at the "laguna del Derrumbe" (Landslide Pond), providing also facilities for picnic and camping, sport fields and three nature trails. A description of the interpretive plan in detail, its flora, geology and climate are included as annexes to this document.
