Evolving system for unified basin planning and management in Alaska
Alaska, with some 586,000 square miles, has stewardship of the greatset concentrated wealth of natural resources in the 50 states. Since statehood in 1959 the beginnings of a resource management posture started to evolve. Major developments including the Alyeska Pipeline project, the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, and currently the Alaska Highway Gasline project are instruments which have focused national attention on the enormity of these resources and call for wise management policies. The Alaska Water Study Committee (AWSC) was formed in 1968, as an ad hoc committee to advise the Water Resources Council relative to water and related land resource issues and policies. Since formation AWSC has sponsored the Alaska section of the 1975 National Assessment, and the current Southcentral Water Resources Study. Both initial and ongoing efforts are focused on evolving a cooperative, interactive forum, a management process, and appropriate technical tools for addressing resource needs and issues. AWSC is sponsoring development of A Regional Water Resource Management Process, and will be sponsoring and "In-Stream Flow Study". It is also providing funds to develop a planning guide as a prelude to initiating a second major basin planning study
