Tropical forest management-time to do something about it

It is time to do something about tropical forest management. Tropical forests influence the climate and standard of living of people worldwide but are being wasted with little effort to manage the resource sustainably. The steps towards sustainable development of tropical lands are well known, but it is difficult to anticipate who will implement the required conservation measures. The forestry profession in the tropics lacks sufficient political, social, and financial support and is not in a position to manage the vast tropical forest biome. The consequences of this situation are serious for people in both tropical and temperate zones. Forestry institutions need reorientation, professionalization, and depoliticization in order to assume leadership over tropical forest management. Each country should be allowed to manage its own lands and forests, but international cooperation is needed to bring tropical countries to the capabilities of temperate zone forestry institutions.
