Co-existence of forest management for forest production and wildlife

The management of Cameroon's dense tropical forest for forest and wildlife production is coming out of its embryonic stage - when management prescriptions were based on area rotational annual coupes and minimum diameters, and incorporated little forward planning. With the increasing availability of inventory results, management plans are being drawn up for timber production but are still lacking for wildlife production and for the production of other non-wood forest products. For long term conservation of the remaining forests, apart from proposing an adoptable forest policy, an organizational structure and a land use plan, the forest manager will increasingly dependend on forest resource inventories to draw up management plans, which should intimately involve the rural population. Unless the forest provides the needs of this population, its long term conservation will be uncertain. These needs include forest and wildlife protection.
