Nitrogen availability after seven years of alley cropping with Erythrina poeppigiana and Gliricidia sepium

Nitrogen availability was compared under alley cropping with Erythrina poeppigiana, alley cropping with Gliricidia sepium and sole cropping in La Montaña alley-cropping experiment at CATIE in Turrialba, Costa Rica. Nitrogen uptake of one-month-old maize plants was substantially higher under alley cropping than under sole cropping. This was due to higher rates of soil nitrogen mineralization under alley cropping plus nitrogen made available from the decomposition of the tree prunings.
