The development of agroforestry in Central America
After a brief description of the history of agroforestry in Central America, an account is given of current research and practice, with emphasis on work being carried out by CATIE (Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza), the regional organization in Costa Rica which covers most of the countries of Central America. The research described is on: taungya; shade trees in coffee and cacao fields; growing trees with annual crops or with livestock; alley cropping; live fences and windbreaks; shifting cultivation with managed fallow; and tropical mixed home gardens. Other aspects of work at CATIE considered are methodology, socioeconomics, extension, documentation and training.
