Impact analysis of the forestry component of the CARE-Guatemala Agroforestry Program
CARE has been a leading promoter of natural resource conservation in Guatemala for the past twelve years. Through its Agroforestry Program, it seeks to improve subsistence farmers' yields, increase self reliance in weed production, and decrease pressure on existing forests. CARE's approach has been to provide material and technical support to community groups through the Instituto Nacional Forestal - INAFOR (National Forestry Institute) and Peace Corps. These three institutions have joined forces to promote soil conservation and reforestation throughout Guatemala. After ten years of supporting this effect in Guatemala, an impact analysis was designed to evaluate the forestry component of this program. The two primary objectives of the study have been completed. First, an on-going inventory system compatible with the Program personnel's skill levels was development. Second, a computerized data base that would serve as a starting point for other studies such as growth and plantation management was established. Secondary objectives provided a variety of useful information to Program personnel: site indices, short term yields, plantation management guidelines, etc and provided an estimate of the Program's impact, both in cubic meters and in financial terms
